The species is known for:
- Slender, streamlined body
- Silvery to translucent natural coloration
- Surface-oriented swimming
- Excellent adaptability
- Peaceful social behavior
- Egg-laying reproduction
Selective breeding has produced numerous ornamental Medaka varieties with striking colors, metallic scales, and distinctive patterns.
🏡 Ideal aquarium setup
Rice Fish thrive best in:
- Planted aquariums

Rice Fish (Oryzias latipes)
Description
The Rice Fish (Oryzias latipes), commonly known as Medaka, is a hardy and highly adaptable ornamental freshwater fish recognized for its compact body, elegant swimming style, and remarkable tolerance of a broad range of aquarium conditions. Native to Japan and parts of East Asia, the species naturally inhabits rice paddies, ponds, marshes, slow-moving streams, and other shallow freshwater environments.
The body typically displays a silvery-white to pale golden coloration in the standard form, with translucent fins and a streamlined profile. Depending on the maintained variety, colour expression can range from subtle metallic tones to highly developed ornamental pigmentation. Their reflective scales become particularly attractive under natural or subdued aquarium lighting.
Behaviour is peaceful, active, and strongly social. Rice Fish spend much of their time in the upper portions of the water column, frequently moving between open water and vegetation. They are active without being excessively boisterous and generally coexist well with other peaceful fish of similar size.
Oryzias latipes is also an egg-scattering species. Females periodically produce clusters of eggs that may remain attached near the vent before being deposited among aquatic vegetation or other suitable surfaces. This makes Medaka particularly interesting for aquarists who enjoy observing natural spawning and juvenile development.
Specimens supplied are lab-reared and system-acclimated within controlled, closed-system environments, minimizing early-life stress and supporting reliable adaptation to aquarium conditions. Stock is maintained for structural health, colour quality, behavioural stability, and aquarium suitability.
System & Rearing Notes
Origin: In-house, Nero Labs
Rearing environment: Controlled, closed system
Line status: Maintained ornamental Medaka
Behaviour: Peaceful, active, social
Swimming profile: Primarily upper water column
Feeding behaviour: Omnivorous; accepts prepared, frozen, and appropriately sized live feeds
Habitat preference: Aquatic vegetation, floating plants, shallow areas, and gentle water movement
Colour development: Progressive; pigmentation and metallic reflections can intensify with maturity and conditioning
Breeding behaviour: Egg scatterer; females can produce eggs regularly under suitable conditions
Morphological traits: Compact streamlined body with relatively large eyes and translucent finnage
Minor variation in body colour, scale reflectivity, fin transparency, and overall form may occur between individuals and reflects normal biological diversity within maintained ornamental populations.
Availability & Use
Availability of Rice Fish is cycle-dependent and determined by biological readiness rather than inventory-driven targets. Oryzias latipes is suitable for beginner to advanced aquarists and is particularly well suited to outdoor tubs, planted aquaria, nano ponds, and peaceful freshwater communities.
Best suited for planted aquaria, Medaka-focused displays, shallow outdoor water features, and East Asian-inspired freshwater systems.
Important Note
Rice Fish are strong jumpers and should be kept in a securely covered aquarium where appropriate. Dense floating or marginal vegetation provides shelter and encourages natural behaviour. If breeding is desired, dedicated spawning media or fine-leaved plants can provide suitable surfaces for egg attachment.
Ethical & Operational Context
Distribution of Rice Fish through Nero Labs prioritizes organism welfare, lineage integrity, and responsible propagation of ornamental Medaka. Proceeds support refinement of livebearer and egg-scattering fish husbandry protocols, breeding-line management, behavioural observation, and applied ornamental aquaculture initiatives.
