The Australian Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluviatilis), also known as the Murray River Rainbowfish, is a peaceful Australian rainbowfish recognized for its elongated body, shimmering blue-green and silver coloration, and active schooling behaviour. It is native to freshwater systems of southeastern Australia, particularly the Murray–Darling Basin, where it occurs in rivers, streams, billabongs, and vegetated waterways.

The body typically displays a silvery base with iridescent blue, green, and turquoise tones that become increasingly vivid as the fish matures. Mature males can develop stronger blue-green coloration along the flanks, a deeper body profile, and contrasting yellowish to orange tones in the fins. Females are generally slimmer with comparatively subdued coloration. Under good lighting, the reflective scales produce the characteristic rainbow-like sheen for which the species is known.

Behaviour is peaceful, active, and strongly social.
